Caring for Sterling Silver Jewellery

Silver may need a little bit of care to keep it looking good as contact with the atmosphere can cause it to tarnish.

Tarnishing is not permanent, however, and is easy to clean off with a commercial non-abrasive silver-cleaning product. Always use a 100% cotton cloth to clean and buff silver, as this will prevent scratching. When polishing use a backwards and forwards motion and avoid rubbing in a circular movement. Try and keep the polish off semi-precious stones and amber as some of them can be damaged by excessive contact with moisture.

To help keep silver clean store it in an airtight polythene bag or wrap it in acid free tissue paper. Do not store it in cling-film, newspaper or with rubber bands as all these products can react with the silver and cause discolouration.

Always remember to put on hairspray and perfume before putting on your jewellery to prevent damage.
